Andreeva rolls into Round 2 with 55-minute win over Parks

Back from injury, Mirra Andreeva made short work of Alycia Parks, easing into the US Open second round in just her second match since Wimbledon.

Andreeva admitted she was nervous facing an opponent who had just reached the Monterrey semifinals, but once play began she settled quickly and stormed through the first set 6-0.

Parks managed to hold serve to start the second set, but that would be her lone game of the day. Andreeva reeled off six straight games to complete a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory in just 55 minutes.

It was a clinical performance from the rising star, who will now face Anastasia Potapova in the second round. Potapova needed three sets to get past China’s Lin Zhu, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

The head-to-head between the two stands at one win apiece: Potapova claimed their first meeting in Monastir in 2022, while Andreeva leveled the rivalry with a victory at Wimbledon in 2023.

The teenager has never made it past the second round in her two prior US Open main-draw appearances and will be aiming to move into the third round in New York for the first time in her career.

Svitolina crashes out in first round

Ukraine's Elina Svitolina became the second highest seed to fall on the women's side at this year's US Open following a straight-sets defeat to Hungary's Anna Bondar.

Bondar, ranked No. 97 in the world, pulled off the 6-2, 6-4 upset win in one hour and 41 minutes to reach the second round and equal her best performance at the Grand Slam level. For Svitolina, it was her first opening-round loss at a Grand Slam since the 2018 Wimbledon Championships.

• Two former top 5 players, Petra Kvitova and Caroline Garcia, called time on their careers after bowing out in the first round. Kvitova, a two-time Wimbledon champion and a former world No. 2, was defeated by Frenchwoman Diane Parry 6-1, 6-0 while Garcia, the winner of the 2022 WTA Finals and a former world No. 4, went down to Kamila Rakhimova 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
• 30th seed Dayana Yastremska was another seed to exit the US Open in the first round. The Ukrainian went down in a tense three-set battle 6-7, 7-6, 6-4 to former Roland-Garros runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
• The seeds to advance on Monday included No. 9 Elena Rybakina, who eased past American wildcard Julieta Pareja 6-3, 6-0; 15th seed Daria Kasatkina, who overcame Elena-Gabriela Ruse 7-5, 6-1; 17th seed Liudmila Samsonova, who needed three sets to beat China's Yue Yuan 4-6, 6-4, 6-4; 19th seed Elise Mertens, who knocked out American wildcard Alyssa Ahn 6-1, 6-0; 28th seed Magdalena Frech, who defeated Australian wildcard Talia Gibson 6-2, 6-2; and 29th seed Anna Kalinskaya, who beat American wildcard Clervie Ngounoue 6-0, 5-7, 6-4.
